This listing covers the British Library's holdings of material
printed from 1801 to 1900 inclusive from and about Portuguese- and
Spanish-speaking territories in Sub-Saharan Africa. Nineteenth-century
editions of earlier works are included, principally accounts of
discovery and exploration.
The first, or general, section of the checklist lists material which
covers Hispano-Lusophone Africa as a whole. Subsequent entries are
grouped by country, sub-divided by subject, and then arranged alphabetically.
Little information has been added to the records in the Integrated Catalogue.
However, headings for Portuguese personal names which in the General
catalogue filed under the penultimate
surname have been revised to file under the last name of the surname.
Monographs published in the Boletim da Sociedade de Geographia
de Lisboa from its 1a serie (1877-78) to its 18a serie (1900)
are occasionally catalogued separately: for items not separately
catalogued, there is a cumulative index to the volumes up to 1892
in 11a serie, no. 12 (1982).
