E Strategy and Information systems

At the British Library, the scale, scope and longevity of the IT challenges we face are unique. And the solutions we are developing are world-leading. We have already implemented one of the largest integrated library systems in existence. It contains 30 million records, is searched 25 million times a year and delivers 5.9 million items to our readers and staff. We are developing web archiving technology, to preserve sites for future generations. And we’re creating an information hub that will be a first-stop for biomedical researchers.

Perhaps most excitingly of all, we’re building one of the largest digital library systems in the world. It’s designed to give us long-term access to websites and eJournals, as well as items from our current collections that we’ve turned into digital form. We estimate that this store will contain one billion objects and occupy one petabyte of storage by 2012. The department is also leading an EU-funded project called Planets, which focuses on digital preservation, and includes partners as diverse as Microsoft and national libraries across Europe.

We look after our own people too – a recent survey of employee computer users demonstrated very high levels of satisfaction with the service they received.

Join us, and you will be joining a world-class team of technical experts in digital library technologies from search & navigation and digital preservation to XML and digitisation. The future of our collections is digital. Help us secure that future.
