Workshop outline

In what ways does food relate to identity? What role does food play? How much does the food we eat reflect who we are? What rituals and practices are associated with food?

This workshop draws on some fascinating collection items relating to food, including photographs, sound recordings and newspapers, to investigate how food can be used to examine identity.

Drawing from personal experience, participants will be asked to suggest ways that food is connected to notions of identity – individual, community, regional, national and international. The workshop will encourage debate about the ways that traditions associated with food change over time and how this impacts on our identity.

Through discussions and creative activities, students will explore the cultural, historical and social significance of food.
