Help on podcasts

DownloadsWhat is downloading?

Downloading means saving a file to your computer. You can download an audio recording of a discussion and listen to it at a time that suits you.

The British Library is making recordings of selected events available as downloadable audio files (in MP3 format). However not all events are suitable to be offered in this way.

If you haven't made an audio download before, this is what to do:

Click on the link using the right-hand mouse button and 'Save.' on a PC. On an Apple Mac, press control as you click on the link, and select 'Download linked file' from the menu. Remember where you have saved it so that you'll be able to find it easily.

Click on the download link and the audio file will play. Your media player software will open and the recording will start. If you wish, you can copy it to your personal MP3 player and listen to it on the move.

RSS What is podcasting and RSS?

Podcasting allows you to receive the latest episode in a series as soon as it's available. You 'subscribe' to a podcast like a magazine (using a program called RSS), to get it sent to you regularly. Our podcasts are free, and you can cancel at any time.

As well as an internet connection, you need podcast software (e.g. iTunes), often available free of charge. The program checks for new episodes and downloads them automatically.

To sign up, simply copy and paste the link below into the podcasting program on your computer:

http://www.bl.uk/onlinegallery/whatson/downloads/files/podcastmp3.xml

In iTunes, you go to the 'Advanced' menu and choose 'Subscribe to podcast', following the instructions.

Details of podcast software are available on Podcasting News.
