Welcome to the Manuscripts Reading Room Reference Service

The Manuscripts Reading Room on the 2nd floor of the St Pancras building provides access to the Library's collections of 'western' manuscript material. That is, primarily, materials written by hand in western European languages.

Post-1500 Music Manuscripts can now be read in the Rare Books & Music Reading Room.

For enquiries about the manuscript collections held in the British Library, contact staff in the Manuscripts Reference Service, who will be happy to help you.

Electronic resources

  • British Library subscribed and some free manuscripts resources.

British Library subscribed services are only available within the Library's Reading Rooms - access from outside the Library is not available owing to licensing restrictions.
