Address

The Newspaper Reading Room is in Colindale, north London. The full address is:

British Library Newspapers, Colindale Avenue, London, NW9 5HE, United Kingdom
Tel: +44 (0)20 7412 7353

Admission policy

Admission to the Newspaper Reading Rooms is by Reader Pass; either a Newspaper Reader Pass or a British Library photographic Reader Pass, as issued by Reader Registration at the British Library, St Pancras.

A Newspaper Reader Pass is available to anybody over the age of 18 who needs to use the Newspaper collections for research purposes, to consult material not readily available in other libraries.

Newspaper reader Passes are issued to applicants in person in the Newspaper Reading Room. You will need to show two forms of identification, one proof of your identity (e.g. Passport, driving licence, bank cheque card etc) and one proof of your address (e.g. Utility Bill, Bank Statement, Driving Licence with address etc).

Special admission arrangements apply to readers under the age of 18. If you are under 18, please contact us before you visit the Library giving details of your age, the subject of your research, and the newspapers or periodicals you wish to consult.

Opening Hours

The Newspaper Reading Rooms are open Monday to Saturday, 10.00 to 17.00, except on public holidays. The Reading Rooms are closed on Sundays throughout the year. There are also seasonal closures.

Applications for newspapers must be made before 16.15.

New readers are advised to arrive as early as possible to give them adequate time to identify, order, and read the newspapers or periodicals they wish to consult.

Most items in our collection are kept in store and readers need to identify what they want to see by consulting our Newspapers online catalogue and then completing paper application slips. This means that you must ask for specific newspapers and periodicals of specific dates, which are then fetched for you by staff.

Readers should be aware that the vast majority of newspapers have no index and there are relatively few historic newspapers available online, so it can be very difficult to study a large subject or a general theme through newspapers alone if you do not have a good idea of when and where the articles you want were published. In this case, you may use your time more effectively by consulting books and other materials on your subject before you consider coming to the Newspaper Reading Rooms.

Readers should be aware that many newspapers in our collection are available on microfilm only.

Ordering items in advance

We strongly advise all readers to order material in advance of a visit to the Newspaper Reading Rooms. You may order:

Advance requests must be received a minimum of 48 hours (excluding Sundays) before the date required.

When ordering, you must state:

  • Your name
  • The title and date of the newspaper or journal you wish to request
  • The date you require the items
  • The shelfmark
  • Your telephone, fax or email contact details so that we can advise you if any of the items you have requested are unavailable.

Information for readers with disabilities

There is also a small car park and readers with disabilities may reserve parking spaces.

Some signage in the public areas of the Library incorporates braille for the benefit of visually-impaired users.

An induction loop is in operation at the entrance lobby to the Library and in the main Reading Room for the benefit of hearing-aid users.

We are developing our facilities for people with disabilities, and readers are advised to telephone us on +44 (0)20 7412 7353 or email us in advance, so that any special arrangements that are needed may be made.
