The Social Sciences Reading Room provides access to the British
Library's significant collection of social science books, journals and research
reports and to the Library's collection of official publications.
On the shelves of the Social Sciences Reading Room you will find catalogues, bibliographies, indexes and other quick reference materials to help with your research. Whilst some material is available on open access in the Reading Room, most is in closed access and has to be ordered in advance.
Staff in the Reference Service team are happy to deal with enquiries about our Social Science and Official Publications collections. If you are unable to visit us in person, you can contact us by 'phone, fax, letter or email. Basic enquiries such as:
- Help with subject enquiries;
- Information on the British Library's social sciences and official publications collections
are answered free of charge using our extensive reference collections and the growing amount of material available on the Internet. More complex enquiries will be referred to our Research Service, or to an external research agency.
Electronic resources
We have compiled a list of British Library subscribed and freely
available resources. British Library subscribed resources are only
available within the Library's Reading Rooms - access from
outside the Library is not available owing to licensing restrictions.
If you do not find the resource you are looking for,
please check the list of electronic
resources in the British Library St Pancras Reading Rooms to
see what is available in other Reading Rooms.
